Translating Minnesota Nice: “Interesting” vs. “I-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g”

“Wasn’t That House Interesting!” — Compliment or Dis?

At least outside of Minnesota, “interesting” actually can mean . . . “Interesting.”

As in, “unique” (in a good way), “provocative,” or “stimulating.”

By contrast, when Minnesotans say it — especially in the context of house-hunting, and they enunciate the word slowing (“i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g”) — they invariably mean “unique” (in a bad way), “peculiar,” or “unusual” (also in a bad way).

Buyers’ agents who don’t want to waste their time are adept at making the distinction . . .

Maybe Trump WASN’T Lying When He Said, “I Alone Can Fix It”

“What’s the Highest Point in Hennepin County?”

There sure seems to be some confusion on that, umm . . . point. I’ve now encountered at least three different properties — none close to one another — that all claimed that status in just the last month. For the record, according to Hennepin County’s website, it’s on Williston Road near High Point Road in Minnetonka — 1,131 feet above sea level.
