Minneapolis Waits for Dark

Walz: We’re ‘Under Assault’ From Outside Agitators.”

The unbelievably beautiful weather in Minneapolis today was a surreal backdrop for an equally unbelievable scene in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood this afternoon (I live just west).

In order of what was most eye (and ear) catching:

–The sounds of sawing and hammering everywhere, as store owners cut and nailed plywood boards (see above). About 80% of the Uptown stores — which are all closed — were already boarded up.

–The procession of cars slowly headed east on Lake St., towards the South Minneapolis neighborhood where George Floyd was killed while in police custody, and where looting and fire damage have been concentrated the last few nights.

–In a city where you can go months without seeing an out-of-town license plate (save perhaps Wisconsin), in less than 30 minutes I saw cars with plates from Ohio and Manitoba, and a huge pickup truck from Idaho (see, Governor Walz’s alarm about “outside agitators”).

Message to such outsiders: you weren’t welcome here before, in the middle of a pandemic, and you’re certainly not welcome here now.

–The sound and sight of a news(?) helicopter hovering, stationery, over Lake Bde Make Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun).

I know the vast majority of people believe that the best way to honor George Floyd’s tragic death isn’t by vandalizing the city, especially one dealing with a pandemic and widespread economic suffering right now.

It’s to make sure it’s the last time it happens — in Minneapolis, or anywhere else . . .

“What’s the Highest Point in Hennepin County?”

There sure seems to be some confusion on that, umm . . . point. I’ve now encountered at least three different properties — none close to one another — that all claimed that status in just the last month. For the record, according to Hennepin County’s website, it’s on Williston Road near High Point Road in Minnetonka — 1,131 feet above sea level. “Are You a Realtor?” “Why, Yes I Am!”

“There Goes My Realtor!” Admittedly, the intended effect is for clients who see me in and around the neighborhood where I live (by Cedar Lake in Minneapolis) to see my car on the road and say, “There Goes My Realtor!” But, my custom license plate (above) is also a conversation-starter when I’m parked. Like today, in Linden Hills, where a builder who has an upcoming listing saw my car and asked if I was a Realtor.
