Farewell, Tin Fish; Hello . . . ???

Big Change(s) in Store for Lake Bde Maka Ska (and it’s not the name)

Yeah, Yeah, I know “Tin Fish” wasn’t the name of the restaurant on the northeast corner of Lake Calhoun that was destroyed by fire two weeks ago.

After a 14-year run, it closed in 2017, and Lola’s on the Lake replaced it last year.

But, at least to the locals (myself included), it never really stopped being the Tin Fish.

Now, in then wake of a fire of dubious origins two weeks ago, the site is  . . .  nothing (officially, it’s an in-progress demolition surrounded by a yellow-taped no-man’s land).

Nod to Higher Density

What will replace it?

I don’t think anyone knows at the moment.

But, I have a suggestion: in the spirit of Minneapolis 2040 and higher urban density, why not construct a bigger, multi-story building — one that’s suitable for year-round use, not just the Summer?

The location could very well be the best in Minneapolis, if not the Twin Cities.

It’s not hard to conceive of a 2-story or even 3-story building on the site, topped by a patio overlooking the lake (just imagine enjoying drinks or coffee there!).

Done right, the landlord — the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board — could enjoy a financial windfall, rent-wise, and also create a bevy of new jobs.

P.S.: I can already hear, “but, what about parking??” No, there’s not room for much if any.

But, why not design it with plenty of bike parking??

“What’s the Highest Point in Hennepin County?”

There sure seems to be some confusion on that, umm . . . point. I’ve now encountered at least three different properties — none close to one another — that all claimed that status in just the last month. For the record, according to Hennepin County’s website, it’s on Williston Road near High Point Road in Minnetonka — 1,131 feet above sea level. “Are You a Realtor?” “Why, Yes I Am!”

“There Goes My Realtor!” Admittedly, the intended effect is for clients who see me in and around the neighborhood where I live (by Cedar Lake in Minneapolis) to see my car on the road and say, “There Goes My Realtor!” But, my custom license plate (above) is also a conversation-starter when I’m parked. Like today, in Linden Hills, where a builder who has an upcoming listing saw my car and asked if I was a Realtor.
