“Excuse Me, But We Must Have Forgotten to Remove One of Our Inventory Control Tags”

Kinder, Gentler Store Security

Once upon a time, a shoplifter (at least one who was detected) was met with a hail of “Stop! Thief!”

stop thiefWith the advent of electronic tags, that changed to alarm bells, flashing lights, or other gaudy displays.

Today?

At least at Knollwood the other day, I heard this polite-but-loud announcement over the public address system:  “Excuse me, but we must have forgotten to remove one of our inventory control tags.”

(It wasn’t me, promise.)

P.S.:  CPA’s do the same thing.  The euphemism for the shortfall between inventory on the books vs. inventory actually on-hand is called “shrinkage.”
